The word “evolution” originates from the Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in many different ways as the concept has changed in both science and elsewhere. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to evolve into a different species. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist pupil who invented the term “transmutation” to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student. Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process in which living things develop characteristics that increase their chances of survival or producing offspring. Over time the genetic variability could cause the emergence of completely new biological functions or physical traits in the population. Such a change in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and it is the main driver of evolutionary changes. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, can't be considered to be evolutionary because they don't pass on to future generations. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit the teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research is urging the removal of textbooks about the evolution of horses and the avian ancestral Archaeopteryx. While these are disturbing developments, it is important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from a variety of sources, such as fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. Other scientists independently verify the evidence. The majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. The reasons for this support are diverse. Scientists are studying evolution to discover practical solutions such as developing new medicines and other treatments, while others use it to improve the lives of animals and plant species, usually for the benefit of humans. Some scientists are just curious, while others hold a an intense belief in God. What is Creationism? Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and everything within it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken as such. Although some creationists are not Christian, they are a majority. Creationists generally fall into two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC). The most well-known type of creationist is known as the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact manner described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of the first six days of creation is literal and that the universe and life on Earth were created just recently. OECs may be less known, but their beliefs are just as fierce as those of YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions of years old and believe that evolution is a lie. Both forms of creationism deny the scientific theories that natural selection and biogenesis can explain how life started on Earth. They claim that evolution is inconceivable because it requires miracles. The founders of modern science shunned miracles in fear that they might lose their credibility. Some creationists accept both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and call their position “theistic evolution.” This is sometimes known as “continuous creationism” or “evolution from the original species.” The theory says that God creates original species and then allows these to change over time. Eventually the evolutionary changes create new species that are similar to the original ones. Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event known as the Great Flood. They believe that the original species were all created at the same time, and that they developed gradually afterward. They also deny the notion of abiogenesis and claim that the emergence of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is impossible. In general, creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education support this position, as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, certain researchers and educational institutions are more flexible and permit the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curricula. What is Creationism? When people think of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. Publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their editions. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) is the one who has led this campaign. The STR has scored its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of the bird, the Archeopteryx. Its next target is to eliminate the finch-research of Darwin's famed and also on human evolution. STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and individual members. Its aim is to root out what it sees as the “atheist materialism” that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists who live in the US. A survey of undergraduates studying biology revealed that half of them didn't believe in evolution. The causes are not evident, but they could be due to religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the country. The KACR has achieved a number of things through its seminars and lectures. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and the book. One of these was a textbook on natural science that had a creationist perspective. This led to an interest in the college community. In 1991, a professor along with a minister, began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught in the present. On August 6 and 7, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
